~ A woman's diary... Maya~
Her little brother stood there crying, stomping his feet while she has to give away her chocolate bar to him so that he will stop crying. Her right cheek was red after the tight slap that was given by her mom for arguing with her brother over a chocolate. She was only 9 at that time. With a heavy heart, she walked away from the living room. "Maya, there's a phone call you. Quick!", she was frightened by the voice and quickly attended the call from one of her clients. A moment of silence in her office, brought her back to the olden days, when she was younger. She grew up compromising with everyone around her. She had to give up and sacrifice her likes just to see her family happy. It was 5pm as her thoughts were lingering around. She packed up her stuffs and rushed out from the office to pick her 6 year old daughter from the day care centre. Wonder where is her husband? She is a single mother. The father of her daughter left her few years ago because she never wanted to give up on her career. This is what happens when a woman wants to do what she likes.
Maya, an young and independent single mother who is turning 30 end of this year. She was a successful accountant in a well-known company. She lives alone with her daughter in the house she bought last year from the savings she had since she started working. She is alone only because she move on from being a typical Indian woman who compromised and convinced herself to do what people like and ignored her self interests. But, she does not care a bit about that. She is living her life in her own terms, in the way she wanted to run her life. Maya was born in a typical Indian family in the 80's and she was taught to compromise in a very tender age. She was only 6 years old when her mother sent her little brother to swimming classes while she helped her mother to bake cookies at home. Her mother sold pastries and cookies in the evening to support their family's financial needs. She grew up thinking that women are made to be sacrifice and compromise.
When she was 17, she completed her higher secondary school with excellent results and wanted to purse a Degree in Art. She loved designing and drawing. She wanted to be a successful and professional graphic designer. Maya's dreams were shattered when her father did not approve her request to continue her higher education in graphic designing. He believed that "drawing and sketching" is a waste of time. He forced Maya to take up accounting course which she hated to the core. She was forced to do what she disliked. She tried to make her mother understand. But, what would the poor old woman do? She was compromised into the life she is living now as well. Eventually, Maya continued her higher studies in Accountancy in a university 20 kilometers away from her house. Her parents never wanted her to stay in a hostel because they could not afford to pay her hostel fees monthly. Ironically, her brother was studying in a private international school where they paid his expensive fees monthly. Maya was disappointed but she was helpless. Years passed by and she finally completed her degree in accounting. Even though, she hated Accounting, being a naturally smart student, she passed her exams in flying colors. Her friends and lecturers were very helpful along with Abraham, her boyfriend.
Abraham and Maya were in a relationship since the second year of her being in university. Upon completing her studies, they were together for 3 and a half years already. They both loved each other deeply and wanted to get married after they have gotten jobs. Abraham's parents loved Maya for her sweet character and humble personality. They knew she will make a good daughter in-law. It has been almost 4 years but Maya's parents did not have any clue that their daughter is dating someone. First of all, being in a relationship is already a big NO in their typical family. Maya was terrified to inform her typical Hindu parents that she is interested in a man who is a Christian. Abraham parents were mix of Indian and Chinese. After their graduation, Abraham's family started to pressure their son for marriage. While, Maya was still not ready to inform her parents about this relationship.
In this tough situation, they both finally grabbed a job and started to make their own money. No one knew how fast the time moved and Abraham started to pressure Maya badly about their wedding. He loved her very much and was keen to make Maya his wife. They both met Maya's parents to seek approval for their wedding. Maya's guts told her that this is going to lead to a big argument and she can never marry the man of her heart. Maya's dad slapped her in front of Abraham and strongly declined Abraham to marry her. She cried and begged. But, it did not melt the stone heart of Mr. George, her father. Abraham suggested that they run away to a different country and start a new life since both of them were graduates and able to work to run their lives. Regardless of how heartless her dad can be, she still loved her parents dearly and can never leave them that way. Things heated up between the young souls even when they loved each other truly. At the end, they broke up. Abraham was nowhere to be found after they broke up. He blocked Maya from his Facebook account. Blocked her from all sourced that they both were connected with each other. Maya wanted to apologize for causing this heartbreak but she was unable to get in touch with her ex-boyfriend whom she is still madly in love with. Since her family did not allow her to marry the man of her choice, Maya was strong in her decision that she is never going to marry anyone after this.
Unfortunately, Maya's parents were searching for a groom discreetly. They uploaded her details in Indian matrimonial websites and portals. Her photos were given to all their relatives and close friends to find for a suitable husband. Maya who was still battling with the pain of break-up got shocked when she came to know that the groom's family are paying a visit next week. Maya's parents threatened her emotionally to make her agree for the wedding. Days and night were sleepless for the poor young woman. Her pillow was soaked in tears every night. She put on a fake smile and went to work every morning. The pain of breaking up plus with the groom who is coming to see her next week killed her slowly each and every second. But, what could she even do? She could never voice out and she can never do what she likes. She believed that she was doomed to be in that way. Not just Maya, many other women out there are doing the 500 things others like and they cannot do only 50 things that they like.
The groom visited their family and liked Maya. Maya's approval or opinion was not considered at all. Her parents fixed the engagement and wedding dates within 2 months time. They were worried if Abraham comes back with a new problem or if her daughter comes home with a new boyfriend. They immediately made all the necessary arrangements and preparations. As the wedding date was getting nearer, Maya was getting very nervous. She tried to commit suicide few times without her parents or brother knowing. The wedding day finally arrived. She got married with a heavy heart to a stranger whom she only spoke once. Maya George became Mrs Maya Gupta. Her husband's name is Akash Gupta who was a computer engineer. Tall, dark and handsome. He can make any women go gaga over him but Maya felt numb when she was around him. They officially got married and she moved to her in-laws house after the rituals were completed.
"Please...not now. I.. I'm... I'm not ready yet." uttered the soft voice of a woman on bed when her greedy husband forcefully had physical relationship with her. She cried the whole night. She was in pain physically and emotionally. She felt disgusted. Someone touched her without her permission. Her body was molested. But, she was helpless. She can't tell the world that her husband raped her. Days passed by and she was raped every night. Even if you are married to a woman, if you are touching her without her liking it, it is a RAPE! And yes, she was raped every night. They both seldom spoke to each other. Maya leaves to work early in the morning while her husband will be still soundly sleeping. She wakes up early to cook breakfast and handle all the household chores before her mother-in-law wakes up. When she's home in the evening, her husband would still be at work. She was abused emotionally and sexually. After 6 months of her unhappy marriage, she visited her parents' house with her Akash. Her husband was happily chatting with her father in the living room when Maya walked into the kitchen where her mother was. She wanted to tell her mom that she is unhappy and she wants a divorce. She wanted to end the marriage before she gets pregnant or such. She did not like the life she was living. " Beti, it's been 6 months. Are you happy, na? Why isn't there any good news from you? Our relatives are asking, you know". That question from her mom, crashed Maya alive. While she wanted to tell that she is unhappy, her mother was asking about a baby. Out of anger and frustration, Maya started crying and told her mom she wants a divorce. Her mom squeezed her hand and said," this is our family dignity, it's in your hands." That moment, Maya knew her family will never help her out from this situation. How they would when they were the one who put her through this miserable married life? She lost the man she loved and settled with a stranger. As months passed by, Maya came to a point where she was used to all the sufferings. She knew that this was her fate. She was getting used to a miserable life.
One day, while she was cleaning the dishes at the kitchen, she fainted. Maya had to work and also make sure all the household chores are done. She was exhausted everyday and her body could not take it this time. She fainted in the kitchen with a pan in her hand. The noise it made frightened her mother in-law in the living room. They rushed her to the hospital. When Maya woke up, she saw all smiling faces around her. Her parents and brother were around too. She was confused. Her mom hugged her and whispered to her ear,"Thank you." Maya was declared 3 months pregnant. At that moment, she felt like her whole world went dark. Now, she can't step out from the marriage. She is carrying the baby of the Gupta family. The remaining 6 months of her pregnancy was beautiful. Her family took care of her as though she is a Queen who is about the give the family a light in a form of a baby. Her husband was surprisingly loving and caring. Her mother in law helped her in the household chores. She stopped cooking. She gets ample amount of rest everyday. She thought her family is changing. She thought she will have a loving family soon. She build up her expectations.
She was wrong...
They were nice to her only for the baby. Once the baby girl was delivered safely, her entire family started to show their original colors again. She was abused. After having a baby, her husband demanded her to quit her job and look after their daughter at home. Maya argued. Why would she needs to leave her career when there are people to look after her child when she's at work. She demanded that she can raise up a good daughter even by being a working mother. Akash and Maya fought daily. They never got along since the beginning of their marriage and now things has gotten worst. Akash abused Maya often. She wakes up with bruises almost everyday. When she told her mother, they were silent as it involved their so-called family dignity. Akash prepared a resignation letter and sent it to Maya's boss directly. He claimed that Maya is sick and unable to pass the letter by herself. When she got to know about what her husband did, her blood started boiling. She had enough of compromises in life and she decided to not compromise for anything after this.
She packed her stuffs and walked away from the house with her baby. She went to her parents's house thinking that they will be her support. But, they kicked her out. They never wanted their daughter in the house without her husband. She took temporary shelter in a friend's house and sent a divorce notice to Akash in less than a week time. She changed her mobile number resigned from her old job. She was tired of the numerous calls from her useless husband. In a month time, she got a new job but her husband refused to accept the divorce notice and demanded for the custody of their 6 months old baby girl, Sonia. Fortunately, the law stated that any kids below 5 years old has to be in their mother's custody before they can choose to which parent they want to go to. After 2 years full of arguments, tears, misunderstandings and sleepless nights, the divorce was done. Maya has become an official single mother with a 2 years old daughter. All these happened about 3 years ago. After the divorce, Akash got married to a different woman. Maya pushed her family away from her life because they never took responsibility for the hell they have caused in their daughter's life. Maya did not want her daughter to grow up in the similar situation.
Maya is now a successful independent woman who is hailing happily. Two months ago, she got in touch with Abraham, her ex-boyfriend who is still unmarried. His family is willing to accept Maya with her daughter. Abraham is willing to marry Maya as he still loves her since many years ago. But, as for now, Maya's only focus is her daughter and her career. She wants to grow further in her career and provide the best life for her only daughter, the only relation she has now in the world. She decided to move on from the miserable life she was living in since young. Her parents tried hard to get in touch with her. But, they were helpless. The pain she went through in her 30 years of life has molded her into a strong and brave woman. She is now alone and independent, living her life for the world she has, Sonia D/O Maya.
